China’s Critical Illness insurance market has been included in our study since 2000. During this time, the penetration of the Critical Illness insurance market in China has increased significantly, largely due to economic growth and increased consumer awareness of insurance products across China. The incidence of critical illness has also increased and the industry has created a new set of critical illness definitions, implemented on February 1, 2021.

The seventh edition of the Gen Re Asia Dread Disease Survey shows that China has a non-homogenous incidence rate for critical illness, with the Northeast Region of China having the highest incidence rate. This could be explained by the differences in lifestyles across China, as it is a geographically large country. The variable incidence rate and regional lifestyle differences across China are important to understand and to take into consideration when developing critical illness products.
